Dr. Chuck Herring

Chief Thought Partner

For three decades, Dr. Chuck Herring has been a trailblazer in education, championing student, faculty and community well-being. As a senior administrator at South Fayette Township School District, he's transforming the educational landscape by creating a school culture where every individual is respected and valued.

Dr. Herring’s innovative approach tackles school-based trauma head-on. He educates colleagues on best practices and implements restorative measures to support students who’ve faced challenges. His work goes beyond mere acceptance, actively celebrating the rich tapestry of cultures within the district.

But Dr. Herring’s impact extends far beyond a single school district. As one of the founders of SHOUT (Social Handprints Overcoming Unjust Treatment), he’s empowering students across Western Pennsylvania to create safe, culturally-responsive spaces in their schools. This student-led organization, guided by the Handprints Heal Footprints framework, has blossomed into a regional movement under his leadership.

  • Throughout his career, Dr. Herring has consistently pushed the boundaries of educational engagement. Early on, he created Grammar Man®, the world’s first Hip-Hop superhero, making language arts both fun and accessible. His creativity and dedication have not gone unnoticed, earning him recognition as one of the State of Black Learning’s Educators of the Year in 2021.

His leadership earned him the 2021 Innovative School Leader Award from the Pennsylvania School Board Association; check out the the interview here. Dr. Herring’s influence isn’t limited to the United States. In 2022, he participated in a TransAtlantic dialogue with the American Council on Germany, focusing on creating culturally-affirming policies abroad.

Recent accolades include being named one of Penn West Edinboro University’s 2024 Distinguished Alumni, one of Black Leaders Worldwide’s 2024 Doctors of Excellence honorees, and receiving a Jefferson Service Award from Multiplying Good in 2024. These honors underscore Dr. Herring’s status as an internationally respected figure in education.
